Naa eng op…

Yesterday, my brother was singing a Kartel song. As he sang the words “eng op no, biebi” my mother expressed surprised that someone so young would know such a word as “eng”.

Well, Vybz Kartel isn’t all that young, and, as my brother told her, our cousin, who’s a young adult, uses that word.

When I asked her why she was so surprised, she said, “Language evolves.” When I asked her what she expected it to have evolved into by now, she said, “Just ‘hang’.”

Ahhh… I believe my mother inadvertently expressed the old idea that Patois would fade out of use and be replaced by English in time, and with better education. Well… hasn’t happened yet. 🙂

It kom iin laik Patwa naa eng op fi nou.

Interesting to think that Patois would have evolved itself out of existence.

Yeah. It is. But people actually thought, and think that way.

Language deaths do happen, though; when its users believe there’s no benefit to using the language. The fact that that hasn’t happened for Patois yet suggests that even though many people feel it’s for uneducated banter, etc., it still has some cultural value.
