Scandal upon scandal….

What is this?

A da dis?

A da dis?

A black plastic bag? Yes. But if you’re Jamaican, you might say it is a “black scandal bag” (blak skyandal bag), instead. That is what these plastic bags are called here.

For some time, I’ve wondered why we call them that. And recently, someone told me a theory that he heard from his mother:

Apparently, they used to be clear, so everybody could see your business; hence, ‘skyandal’. And then they became opaque, but the name ‘skandal bag’ stuck.

What do you think? Makes sense? I think that little big of history is pretty interesting.
