Why does Yoda talk like that?

Yesterday, I realised I’d never thought about this before. The beloved Star Wars character Yoda’s speech patterns are known even among people like me who’s never sat through even one of the movies (or at least doesn’t remember doing so).

A theory came to mind. And when I did some light Googling, I found a site that says, “Yoda’s syntax resembles that of a non-native English speaker who imports sentence structures from his native language.” That was my theory exactly. Of course there are others on the page.

But this one makes the most sense to me: a matter of Basic (the “English” of the Star Wars universe) not being Yoda’s first language. But I see language issues everywhere, don’t I? 🙂
